The Examiner’s endorsement of Nancy Pelosi (Oct. 6) instructs the congresswoman “to represent The City ... not Washington.” This is good advice.
In 1987 Nancy Pelosi ran for Congress as “Our Voice” in Washington. Today that voice speaks for the special interests in Washington that build careers exploiting civil rights, minorities and the poor.
There are 150,000 voters in District 8 who are Decline to state, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians and “Other.” Moreover, 25 percent of the 188,000 Democrats are moderates who want to hear another voice. Mrs. Pelosi has refused to debate her opponents from the Green party, Libertarian Party or Republican Party.
Representative Pelosi does not speak for The City when she opposes tax cuts that have produced 5.3 million new jobs and record home ownership.
Nancy Pelosi does not speak for The City when she opposes surveillance of suspected terrorists. A nuclear suitcase will kill thousands in minutes. The first civil right is to stay alive and the first responsibility of government is to protect life.
Mrs. Pelosi is calling for “a new direction.” Indeed any direction is a new direction when you don’t know where you are going. The voters of San Francisco deserve to hear from Mrs. Pelosi.
